Creating the Sustainable Development Area was a key step in cementing the company’s commitment to the environment. A sustainable development strategy led to specific actions which have reduced the environmental impact of the company’s operations.
This strategy involves the complete company. The implementation of the first stage consisted in estimating the company’s carbon footprint.
In addition, Concha y Toro subsidiary companies have chosen their own roads to sustainable development. They have been pioneers in the Chilean wine industry with successful, innovative projects and strategic decisions regarding environmental issues.
Cono Sur subsidiary company since its foundation opted for organic wine production. In 1999 Cono Sur launched its pioneering organic wine project for 40 hectares of vineyards in the Colchagua Valley. Cono Sur marked a milestone as the first winery in Latin America to receive the double ISO certification: 9001 and 14001 for its quality and environmental policies. It also d became the first winery in the world to achieve CarbonNeutral ® delivery status, by neutralizing CO2 emissions produced by sea transportation of its wines. In 2009 Cono Sur calculated its carbon footprint for 2008 and 2009 and implemented ISO 14064:2006. The winery has developed lightweight bottles for popular wine ranges and also led a biodiversity project to identify and preserve the ecosystem services which help sustain the wine industry.
Viña Palo Alto subsidiary has an ongoing involvement with reforestation of the planet. It has established partnerships with NGOs and global foundations dedicated to the reforestation of cities, such as "Reforestamos" in Mexico, "Amigos da Floresta" in Brazil and "Mi Parque" in Chile, as well as the "Trees for Cities" initiative in the UK, Palo Alto’s major export market.
On its part subsidiary company Concha yToro UK has become the first subsidiary company in the wine industry to achieve Carbon Neutral certification by The Carbon Neutral Company. This initiative lines up with the company’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions, energy use and waste. By adopting diverse internal and external measures that affect the activities of the office and employees, the company has been able to exactly measure its emissions and effectively reduce them, with positive results.
In spite of these initiatives, the company’s road to sustainability did not begin today, as can be seen by a timeline of the many steps Concha y Toro has taken in this direction since 1998.
