Gravas del Maipo

Gravas del Maipo is born as a tribute by Concha y Toro to the majestic Andes and the hidden gravel from silently eroded, displaced and molded soils year after year in the thousands of years old Maipo basin. It reflects the challenge of positioning Chile as a high-quality wine producer, together with the constant and passionate search for identifying those terroirs that faithfully express the character of a grape variety.

Variety

Syrah

Denomination of Origin (D.O.):

Buin, Maipo Valley

Origin

The Quinta de Maipo Vineyard is located 420 m above sea level and extends along the southern bank of the Maipo River at the foot of the Andes Mountains. The vines come from a massal selection and are trellised to vertical shoot position. The rocky characteristics of the alluvial soil with gravel to two meters deliver complex, elegant, and nicely rounded tannins to the Syrah.

Soil

Of alluvial origin, silty-clay in the rst horizon. Gravel predominates below the surface, which lends the soil good permeability and few nutrients.

Climate

Semi-arid Mediterranean with Andean influence and protected by the nearby hills. The area has a long dry season, and precipitation is concentrated between June and August.

Aging

15 months in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% one use).

Wine Spectator
Wine SpectatorGravas del Maipo 2011“Dense and powerful, with layers of dark fruit fringed by concentrated smoke and Asian spice notes. The muscular finish is filled with dark chocolate and espresso accents that are rich and alluring.” -Kim Marcus

Michael Schachner | Wine EnthusiastGravas del Maipo 2010 “This is a ripe Syrah, with warm, earthy, raisiny aromas of blackberry, vanilla and prune. The palate is so dense and extracted that it feels spongy, while a full-force flavor profile includes inky blackberry, graphite and minty oak. On the finish, this is fat, jammy and baked in flavor while soft in feel.”
