Musts in Santiago 4: Pirque, the county where Concha y Toro was born

Only 21 kilometers from downtown Santiago, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains lies the where Concha y Toro winery was born. Here you will find the attractions and restaurants that make Pirque a rural tourism alternative very close the capital.

Attractions

Río Clarillo, Pirque, Santiago de Chile / Clarillo river, Pirque, Santiago de ChileClarillo River National Reserve Park: is a national reserve created in 1982 with nearly 500 planta species, this park is an excellent option for family outings. It has crystalline water pools which can be used in the many sunny days Santiago has the year round.

The park is recommended in all seasons. There are two hiking trails and an environmental information center.

Keep in mind that winter is the rainy season in Chile, and given the park’s altitude of 1.800 meters, it might snow. However, tours offered are adapted to the seasons.

Pueblo de los Artsenos de Pirque, Santiago de Chile / Artisans' Village in Pirque, Santiago de ChileArtisans’ Village in Pirque: is located in the midst of a centennial forest and tourists are invited to interact with artisans and artists.

You will always find local folk music and the smell of freshly baked bread and Chilean traditional meat pastries, empanadas.

Where to eat?

La Cocina de Blaine Restaurant, Pirque, Santiago de ChileLa Cocina de Blaine Ristorante (ex Travigne): with 13 years in the area, this place offers its guests first-class Italian cuisine made by owner, Blaine von Moren, who studied in the U.S. and worked in the famous Napa and Sonoma Valleys, California.

Their prices range from CLP$5.000 to CLP$17.000, the latter being the value of a “Trito di Pasta” sampler with pasta selected by the Chef serving 3-4 people.

Concha y Toro wines are prominent in the wine menu. The Chef recommends pairing a Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 with the raviolini and shrimp and mushroom sauce -made with Ecuadorian shrimp, onions, cream, fresh mushrooms and both fresh and dried tomatoes.

Restaurant Bamboo, atendido por sus propios dueños en Pirque, Santiago de Chile / Bamboo Restaurant, serve by its owners in Pirque, Santiago de ChileBamboo Restaurant: in 2005, Pepe Valdivia, Rocío Gálvez and their young son Emilio decided to restore a century-old Chilean colonial house and transform it into the Bamboo Restaurant.

The chef’s specialty is Patagonian lamb, but he also offers dishes such as salmon, pasta and beef steaks, among others.

The lamb is prepared with Cabernet Sauvignon and can be accompanied with mashed potatoes, potatoes with merquén (a native smoked chili preparation), rice and more. Prices begin at CLP$7.500 depending on the side dishes.

In addition, there are ribeye steak at CLP$5.800, chicken at CLP$5.500, greek-style reineta (white fish) or salmon from to CLP$5.500 to CLP$6.300.

La Bonanza Restaurant, Pirque, Santiago de ChileLa Bonanza Restaurant: located only 5 minutes from Concha y Toro winery for over 20 years, La Bonanza Restaurant offers top-quality Chilean, Argentinian or Uruguayan style barbecues, says manager Luis Vásquez.

On Fridays and Saturdays, La Bonanza has a lively mood with dancing and live music. Children can play in a special area. There is a pergola outside for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Vasquez recommends the beef fillet or ribeye à La Bonanza, that is, au gratin with cheese, mushrooms, sautéed vegetables and potato fries, paired with a Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere 2008. Prices are around CLP$5.000 per dish on average.

El Marqués Restaurant, Pirque, Santiago de ChileEl Marqués Restaurant: facing Concha y Toro winery, the land where it is located once belonged to Marques de Casa Concha, founder of Vina Concha y Toro and in his honor the restaurant was named “The Marquis” by owner Sebastian Yancovic.

Inside, Yancovic zealously keeps Casillero del Diablo and Marques de Casa Concha wines dating from 1900.

The restaurant offers Chilean gourmet-style food that does not lose its traditional character. The star dish is the ossobuco and mushrooms stew and “the perfect pairing is a Marques de Casa Concha Syrah 2008,” says Yancovic. He serves you himself and the average price per person is CLP$12.000.

Other popular meat dishes are “plateada al jugo” (braised flank steak) and boeuf bourguignon.

El Marqués Restaurant offers lunch only. However, sometimes there are special Friday theme dinners open to all customers.
