Viña Concha y Toro’s icon Carmenere, Carmín de Peumo, was named to the Top 100 list of Terroir Wines in the fall edition of the US magazine Wine & Spirits.

The ranking includes wines tasted over the past 12 months by the magazine’s tasting panel, made up of Patrick J. Comiskey, Joshua Greene, Peter Liem, Tara Q. Thomas, and Chilean winewriter Patricio Tapia, and highlights those with the “most powerful expression of terroir in their respective regions.” The score assigned to each wine has a parallel on the Richter scale used to measure seismic movement, and therefore the best wines have a score ranging from 5.0 to 8.4.

Carmín de Peumo 2008, with a score of 6.5, was highlighted by critic Patricio Tapia as a Carmenere with monumental structure,” notes of spice, and the ripe black fruit typical of the red wines from the region.

Peumo terroir

Peumo is located in the Cachapoal Valley in Chile’s VI Region, 170 meters above sea level on the north bank of the Cachapoal River. Thanks to its excellent climate and soil conditions that have turned the area into the home of the nest Carmeneres from Concha y Toro and Chile.

Carmín de Peumo, in the hands of the renowned winemaker Ignacio Recabarren, comes from Block 32 in the Peumo vineyard, where the deep alluvial soils contain an abundance of clay, whichg allows good moisture retention and encourages controlled plant growth.

The Peumo climate is sub-humid Mediterranean, with warm days and cold nights. The inuence of the Cachapoal River allows the nighttime temperatures to drop during the summer, which allows the grapes to ripen more slowly.

Ever since the rst Carmín de Peumo (2003) was released it has consistently earned outstanding international acclaim and has been singled out by Wine & Spirits as Chile’s Best Carmenere on three occasions.
