Terrunyo Riesling 2011: N°1 in the “Best Other Whites” category
The first vintage of Terrunyo Riesling—2011—made by winemaker Ignacio Recabarren, was chosen Nº 1 in the “Best Other Whites” category of the most recent edition of the Descorchados wine guide written by the distinguished winewriter Patricio Tapia.
Riesling is a new variety in the Terrunyo line and was released to market for the first time in early 2012. It comes from the Los Boldos Vineyard in the coldest sector of Casablanca, just 15 km from the Pacific Ocean. The fruit comes from Block 6, which is one of the coldest in the entire vineyard. The vines are planted in the highest part of the vineyard, where their exposure to the coast combine with the area’s cool breeze and shadows to moderate the temperatures, allow the grapes to ripen later than in other sectors.
Earlier this year Terrunyo Riesling 2011 made its the debut when it was named “Best Other White” in Chile’s most important wine competition, the Ninth Annual Wines of Chile Awards (AwoCA), organized by the Wines of Chile trade association. This version brought nine renowned international experts to Santiago for five days of tasting more than 600 of Chile’s finest wines. The judges found special merit in the Riesling variety, and although it is relatively new in Chile, it bested other better-known varieties in the Best Other Whites category, and the award went to Viña Concha y Toro for its Terrunyo Riesling 2011.
