Concha y Toro’s Center for Research and Innovation joins the launch of UC Davis’ Center of Excellence in Chile

Following its recent opening in Chile, the Center of Excellence of the University of California, Davis, UC Davis-Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center (UC Davis LINC) –which has funding from Corfo's Program for the Attraction of Centers of Excellence– organized, as a presentation, a Viticulture and Enology workshop, which was conducted in the United States on January 15 and 16. A Chilean delegation, including Yerko Moreno, Patricio Parra, Gerard Casaubon and Juan Cury, among other leading researchers from Chilean universities, the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) and CORFO, traveled to the United States to participate in the “Viticulture and Enology Workshop for the Chilean Wine Industry” held in the auditorium of the university’s Winery Classroom.

The seminar, led by Alan Bennett and Pablo Zamora, Executive Director and Chief Science Officer at UC Davis LINC, respectively, had as main objective to identify and prioritize research, development and innovation (R+D+i) needs, according to current demands of the Chilean wine industry, which in the future will be addressed jointly by UC Davis, its Center of Excellence in Chile, and Concha y Toro’s Center for Research and Innovation (CII), with whom there are already existing research partnerships.

For this reason the CII opened its doors to members of the Chilean industry, to share with them a real-time transmission of the discussions that took place during this workshop.

Gerard Casaubon, director of CII, spoke about the partnership of Viña Concha y Toro with the Center of Excellence, UC Davis LINC: “As an industry, we are very excited about this experience of defining areas of research and expected results, as well as the expectations of developing a partnership in applied research that will generate a positive impact”.

On Thursday 15, the workshop session focused on the area of Viticulture with the participation of Alan Bennett, Andrew Walker and Dario Cantu. On Friday 16, professors Roger Boulton, Sue Ebeler and Hildegarde Heymann, among others, did their presentations, delivering an excellent session on Enology and Production Technology.

Also, and providing the point of view of the local industry, the delegation of Chilean professionals participated in the workshop discussions.

This seminar was the main activity whereby UC Davis launched its Center of Excellence in Chile, a place that aims to identify the needs of the Chilean wine industry and contribute to its future development through R+D+i. The results obtained will be shared with Concha y Toro’s CII (and vice versa).
