The cuisine of this huge and beautiful country is undoubtedly an important part of its culture. If you can visit Russia, don’t forget to try its typical dishes, or why not, if you are staying in home, dare yourself to prepare some of these recipes to enjoy with family and friends.
Russia is a huge country, part of Europe and Asia. People from different nations live on its territory and it has borders with many countries. This makes it a country rich in culture and traditions with a varied and tasty cuisine. Here we present a list of its best-known dishes around the world.
Soups are very common within the daily diet of the Russians. They can be made of meat, sausage, fish, salted cucumbers, however, the most famous of all is the Borsch soup, which is made with potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, onions, meat and beets. Thanks to this last ingredient, its color is intense red. You can add acid cream to accentuate its flavor. This dish is so important for Russian families that they can eat it 3 times a week. For this soup we recommend Trio Merlot, a blend of this variety with Carmenere and Shiraz, which will highlight the sweetness of the beets and the other ingredients of this soup.
Russian caviar is already internationally known and there are two types: red, of salmon, and black, of sturgeon. The most common way to eat it is on a piece of bread with butter. Simple and delicious. Also, the dish known as zakuska includes smoked salmon, boiled potatoes and caviar. To accompany these recipes what better than Casillero del Diablo Devil’s Collection Brut, a fresh sparkling wine with balanced acidity.
The Russian paella is known as Plov or Pilaf. This is a preparation based on rice, carrots and meat, usually lamb. The Buckwheat is very common in Central Asia and another important ingredient in the Russian diet. One of its most traditional recipes is prepared with liver in sour cream served with a vinaigrette salad. For these typical dishes of grain and fatty meats like lamb or interiors, we recommend Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine of great structure and firm tannins.
Other dishes that can be found on the tables of Russian homes are grilled sausages and meats, accompanied by French fries, boiled vegetables, salads or mashed potatoes. And let’s not forget the bread, which is consumed at every meal and is considered one of the most important products of their daily diet. These various preparations can go very well with different wines. With this kind of meal, our advice will be to have a wine pairing with a red of good structure of the variety that you like the most.
For salads, Russians use tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, potatoes, cucumbers, onions and watercress. Undoubtedly one of the most famous is the Olivie salad, known in many countries as Russian salad. This preparation is based on cooked potatoes, peas and carrots, all chopped into cubes and mixed with mayonnaise. The original Russian version also has egg, pickles and ham or chicken. This preparation is so complete that it can be considered as a main course on its own. For this salad and if you prefer white wines, we recommend Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay. If you prefer reds, a great option is Casillero del Diablo Pinot Noir, a delicate wine with soft tannins.
The “Russian pancakes” are known as Blinis, which can be stuffed with jam and cream. The Syrniki is another type of smaller pancake made with cottage cheese. Finally, we highlight the “Russian cheesecake” known as zapekanka, obviously based on cheese and with blueberries. For these desserts based on flours and fruits, we recommend Concha y Toro Late Harvest, since being sweet and fruity it complements very well with all kinds of cakes.
